How to Impress Your Boss

Take Initiative

One of the most surefire ways to make a good impression on your boss is to show that you are a self-starter that will go above and beyond your job description. To do this, it is essential to take initiative without being given direction. This can be in the form of starting an upcoming project early, reaching out to a possible new client or partner, or proposing a new way of doing something in the office to improve efficiency. If your boss sees you doing these things, he or she will see that you put forth an effort to excel in your position. Even if your boss doesn’t directly see you doing these things, there is a high chance someone along the chain of command will sing your praises to them about how proactive of a worker you are.

Slow Down

In today’s corporate world, it can seem like everyone is focused on making things fast, faster, fastest. While it is important to try to be efficient and not waste your time or your company’s time, it is crucial to work at a pace that allows you not to produce the most work, but the best work. In other words, slowing down your pace is worth it if it means making less mistakes and better outcomes. Your boss is more likely to positively note an employee that does a normal amount of work flawlessly than an employee who does a lot of work but with many mistakes.

Be Present

It’s super easy and tempting to take any downtime you have at work to check up on Instagram or listen to your favorite podcast. However when trying to impress your boss, it is essential to be present in your work environment. Instead of using free time to go on your phone, get a head start on next week’s big project or clean out that messy filing cabinet. If you spend your time on work tasks instead of personal or mindless ones, your boss is likely to take note. In addition, make sure to show up to work and meetings on time.

While there is no guaranteed guide on how to impress your boss, following these tips is a great place to start.
